Legionella Risk Assessments and Legionella Control Programmes
Since 1991 it has been a requirement of building owners and managers to comply with the Health and Safety Commission's Approved Code of Practice relating to the control of legionella bacteria within the water systems within the buildings that they are responsible for. The current ACoP 'The control of legionella bacteria in water systems' L8 2000, indicates the following requirements: -

• Preparation of a legionellosis risk assessment for the site/building
• Preparation of a written scheme to control the identified risks from the
assessment
• Implementation of a monitoring and action programme to comply with the
written scheme
• Preparation and up-keep of a record system to record all actions and results
from the programme including any corrective actions taken
• Audit the process and amend the programmes as required

In all these areas there is a requirement for competent people to carry out the work or tasks.

Nation can provide the necessary staff to carry out all of these tasks and provide training for client staff in areas considered suitable.

Nation operates two systems of risk assessment. The type will depend on the specific site requirements.

For individual sites, the assessment is usually carried out using our manual assessment format, which provides a hard copy of the assessment. The logbook that comes from this assessment is also prepared manually and comes in hard copy.

Where multi-site assessments are carried out for one client, we offer an electronic version of the assessments. The client has direct access to the assessments electronically and there is no requirement for a hard copy.

This assessment also has the facility to transfer all the information in the assessment and associated written scheme directly into an electronic version of a logbook. Each site would have its own assessment and linked logbook, which can be reviewed and audited by the client to ensure that he is in compliance with the AcoP. Training in the use of these systems is offered as part of the package.

Nation is a registered member of the Legionella Control Association, and are fully conversant with all the requirements of the Legislation.
